The Royal Air Force (RAF) is the air force branch of the British Armed Forces. The RAF is the oldest independent air force in the world, formed on April 1, 1918. Since its formation the RAF has played a significant role in British military history featuring in every major conflict from the Battle of Britain triumph in 1940 to Operation Telic in 2003. The RAF has over 990 aircraft and in 2006 has 52,800 personnel. The RAF is one of the largest air forces in the world and continues to deliver Air Power to achieve its objectives.
