In keeping with the aims of the ATC and its sponsorship by the Royal Air Force the unit provides cadets and staff with the change to enjoy Air Experience Flights. Cadets from the unit often take part in regular flights in the Grob Tutor at 5 Air Experience Flight one of 12 Air Experience Flights (AEFs) around the UK based at RAF Wyton in Cambrigeshire. These flights typically last for 30 minutes; as part of a structured training syllabus and it is quite usual for cadets to be offered the chance of flying the aircraft or of experiencing aerobatics. Flying instructors are qualified Service pilots, usually serving or retired RAF officers. Prior to attendance at an AEF cadets are required to undergo some basic training regarding the operations of an airfield and the rules and regulations of the air, this ensures cadets are ultimately safe to fly.
The Grob Tutor
The aircraft flown by the AEF’s is the Grob G 115 or ‘Grob Tutor’ as it is known. This aircraft is single a single-engined low-wing monoplane and is used as a basic training aircraft by the Royal Air Force. The aircraft has fixed tricycle undercarriage with wheels, a short nose bearing the engine and a 3-bladed variable-pitch propellor. The cockpit features a broad canopy and all round vision, with side-by-side seating for pilot and student. The wings are tapered with square tips. The Grob Tutor is a good, solid trainer with an impeccable safety record which is used to teach cadets the core skills required to pilot an aircraft.
Flying Scholarship
Cadets who show an aptitude for flying can apply (with some age restrictions) for a flying scholarship with the ATC.
